THE VILLAGES AT GILMORE FARM, Richmond, BC
Kevin Connery was engaged as the sustainable development consultant on multi-disciplinary team charged with developing a visionary concept for the long-term sustainability of 325 acres of existing agricultural land know as the Gilmore Farms within the Agricultural Land Reserve in Richmond, B.C. The concept incorporated planning principles of sustainable agriculture, ecology, community and heritage into a comprehensive, triple bottom line based plan to protect, enhance and utilize the lands for the future. The current hobby farm expansion across the site would be replaced with villages, clustered along a central organizing traffic calmed road. Each village would be compact and distinct, include a solar aquatics waste water treatment plant, and be populated with 2 – 3 storey townhouses, rowhouses and apartments. The development also includes a town hall & village market place, a riverfront market and boardwalk, two day cares and an elementary school. Enveloping the village would be contiguous blocks of agricultural land, used for row crop production, that would be protected by convenant. Date 1996.
